A tremor of surprise tinged with guilt shot through Matilda. She swung around to see a very suspicious Viking dressed in running togs, and staring at her with blue eyes flashing.

Her blood rushed to her feet as her brain creaked like a rusty cog trying to come up with a quick and witty answer, but the combination of being caught red-handed and the sight of sculpted muscular legs left her with nothing. She attacked instead. “Why are you in my room without an invitation?”

A muscle ticked in his jaw. “Cut the politician’s crap of answering a question with a question.”

Oh, God, he had an intransigent look she hadn’t seen before but she gave it another shot. “You bought the clothes for me so therefore they’re mine to do with what I want.”

“I bought them for you to wear not sell.”

She flicked her hand airily. “I won’t need them when my car comes back.”

His eyes took on the steely blue of flint. “Your car might never come back. It’s probably been torched in south Chicago along with everything in it including that tiara you’re planning on selling.”

Every trace of the urbane man she thought she knew had vanished, stripped away until all that was left was the essence of a street fighter. She recognized the attitude—the survivor streak she’d come to know in herself—and she gulped. “How did you know about that?”

“Vanessa just called asking about your wedding tiara and your wedding dress, and now I find you selling your clothes. That line about staying and working in Hobin and experiencing the real U.S. was complete bullshit, wasn’t it?” His voice rumbled deep and ominous. “Even if your car hadn’t been stolen, you don’t have any money do you?”

She grasped at splintering straws. “Look, I didn’t want the clothes but you insisted and Gracie needed the sale, so it was easier to buy them, keep you off my back and make Gracie happy. I’d always planned to sell them and return your money.”

He crossed his arms over the broad expanse of glistening skin, a menacing Viking who didn’t believe a word she was saying. “That doesn’t explain the tiara. It’s time for the truth, Matilda.”

She bit on her lip, welcoming the pain. A type of pain that hurt a lot less than the truth which would expose her completely. Up until now, having Marc think she was slightly deranged had been okay because people got dumped every day. But this was so much more than that.

Sucking in a breath, she spoke quickly. “Barry didn’t just vanish from a marriage. He took…” Her mouth clogged at the starkness of the word money. “He took advantage of me.”

A wave of fury rolled off him, almost knocking her off her feet. “You told me he didn’t have sex with you.”

She shook her head, steeling herself against the pummeling of her own humiliation. “He didn’t. He didn’t want me in any way at all. He only wanted my money.” She forced herself to keep talking so she wouldn’t fall apart.
